Particle Identification Studies with an ALICE Test TPC

چکیده
for the ALICE TPC Collaboration. Received (received date) Revised (revised date) Using a test TPC, consisting of the ALICE TPC field cage prototype in combination with the final ALICE TPC readout and electronics, the energy loss distribution and resolution were measured for identified protons. The measurements were compared to theoretical calculations and good quantitative agreement was found when detector effects were taken into account. The implications for particle identification are discussed.

Charged particle identification in the ALICE experiment
A key feature of the ALICE experiment will be the capability to identify the charged particles in the full range of momentum thus allowing to investigate the properties of the quark-gluon plasma during its dynamical evolution toward the freeze-out phase when the re-hadronization occurs. Low momentum hadron identification will be achieved via measurements of energy loss in the silicon layers of ...
متن کاملOnline Drift Velocity Calibration with the Laser System of the ALICE-TPC
The online drift velocity calibration method provides calibration parameters required at the very beginning of the offline reconstruction process in order to determine the z position of the particle tracks with a sufficient accuracy before the combined track finding [2]. It uses the TPC Laser System which generates 336 straight laser tracks, similar to ionizing particle tracks, at known positio...

ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) is a detector designed to exploit the physics potential of nucleus–nucleus interactions at the LHC. Being a general purpose experiment, it will allow a comprehensive study of hadrons, electrons, muons and photons, produced in the collision of heavy nuclei, up to the highest particle multiplicities anticipated (dN ch /dy = 8000). In addition to heavy syste...
متن کاملA Sonic Time Projection Chamber. Sonified Particle Detection at Cern
In a short-term research project at CERN, an auditory display of elementary particle tracks has been developed. Data stems from simulations of the Time Projection Chamber (TPC) in ALICE experiment. Particle detection there is based on pattern recognition algorithms, but is still today double checked with visualization tools. The sonification works with cluster data of the TPC and was designed i...
متن کاملFirst beam test of the Frankfurt prototype for the CBM TRD
As one of the key components in the CBM experiment, the Transition Radiation Detector (TRD) will play a significant role in the particle identification. A fast detector with double sided readout chambers[1] and a ALICE type of detector with both drift and amplification regions have been designed for the circumstance of high particle rates. We propose to build a fast detector with an amplificati...
